first (very rough) sketch of the interface.
The interface would work as an add-on box to the artworks.
It mainly has 3 functions:
1) on the box is a QR Code that will send you to a website where you can see art routes, get percentage off for drinks, take a quiz and make a personalised route,..
2) it would include a bluetooth speaker, so the user can just connect to it and listen to their music and make it a party location
3) it would be connected to led lights to first catch the attention of by-passers and later to give them the feel of a party which they can control.
10 sketches
This is the first sketch of my idea for an interface, it is a hybrid interface, it consists out of this box which would be at every public art selected. As you can see, you can control the lights, you can choose rainbow colours, one colour, or the lights react on your music.
You can connect your phone to the speaker to listen to your music out loud and finally there's also a QR Code that will lead you to the website with different functions.
This is how I imagined it, the box would be connected to a part of the artwork or next to it, it always depends on the artwork itself, plus some lights to create more of a party ambience.
From the QR Code, you will be sent to this website, where you can see the 3 main actions.
If you click on the routes, you can choose to either take a quiz to create a personalised route/get one of the existing routes. Or you can choose to simply choose one of the existing routes.
This is the place where you can get a code to get percentage off and it will show you which bars/clubs are part of it.
Last but not least, you can also make a reservation to make sure you can get your favourite spot. This can also provide a sense of security because if you are partying you might get complaints and like this, you have proof of being allowed to be there.
Questions to be answered for the first Designing Class:
1. Who are you designing for?

- creatures of the night, we named them "the revellers"
- people mostly in their 20s
- queer spectrum (including allies/lifestyle)
- intensity of the night = undefined
2. What is their relationship to the collection?

- they might pass by the collection(the public artwork) but they usually don't stop to look at it
- they might land on the BKOR.nl website if they are interested in art
- the collection itself can be more unattractive for the user group because art can be a heavy subject, it is also very subjective what is beautiful or not and lastly the artwork at night is rather an unsafe place for this user group
3. Which content are you ‘interfacing’?

- the collection of artwork/ the map of the artworks
- as a group, we analysed the deleted ones
- make a selection of most "attractive" art based on style and location

- the artwork itself
- attach LED lights
- attach a box with control of lights, speaker and a QR Code
4. What type of interaction is fitting for this?

- collection = digital + analog
- digital: you drown in all the info on the website
- analogue: you pass by and might take a quick look but you don't stop for a better look/you don't see the interconnectivity with the other art

goal:
- pimp/clean up the digital information
- analogue: connect physical artworks to the revellers and the locations they pass by naturally
- something that encourages the creatures of the night to take a better look at the artwork(s)
5. What type of medium is fitting for this?

interactive digital interface:
- QR Code near the art
- Quiz to create a personalised route
- given routes on the website
- reservation form

interactive analogue interface:
- grab the attention and give a sense of safety through lights
- give a reason to stay longer -> play with the lights and the speaker
6. In general: what are you trying to accomplish through the interface you want to design?

- create new "corona" proof safe places for queer people/minorities (temporarily lost safe places due to clubs being closed)
- make an artwork a party piece/location
- encourage people to have fun and take a longer look
7. Which visual design elements have you already collected/designed that can be useful for this?

- mapping of the art and party locations in order to overlay them and see where they overlap
- first rough sketch (see above)
- user flow for Publication Station Class
QUICK & DIRTY EXERCISE

1.Pick 1 interface example from your archive and define its medium and the type of interaction and what elements of this would be interesting for your collection and user-group.

2.Visually imagine and sketch how you can connect this medium and the type of interaction to your collection of knowledge.

3.Analyse the effect of your sketch, your choices in medium and interactivity. What are you asking of your user? (inform, shock, guide, question, etc., see post Gabrielle on MyWdKA)Goal: Start exploring options for interactivity and media, make a first step to design experiments, finetuning your research insights.
1. So, the medium is the speaker itself, as it connects the music to the listener. The system behind it is Bluetooth to connect your phone plus music platform such as sportify. One of my ideas of an interface was to create a box that is kind of interactive that would be next to the artworks, so the box would have a speaker which the user can connect themselves to and play their own music, but it would also have a remote to control some lights and the lights could also answer based on the music. Moreover, there would also be a QR Code connected to a website with more connections. This would make the collection more attractive to my user group.
2.(left) My very first sketch

(middle top and bottom) The first 3d prototype

(right) How it could look like connected to the collection, so here it is immediately connected to the artwork, but this isn’t always possible.
3. I want to inform the user that the artwork is more than just a boring static artwork
I want to provoke interaction and get their attention
I want to encourage interaction with the artworks themselves!
I want to guide them first to one artwork so they can discover for themselves and best-case scenario continue with other artworks.
I want to motivate people to take a closer look at artworks and make them more than just decoration, so it can also become a “party” place.
I want to empower my user group by giving them a space of their own to party since their safe places are closed right now.
I want to amuse my user group with my box.
I want my user group to use art routes because it’s fun and it fits into a spontaneous plan and not as something heavy minded.
prototype for the pARTy Box
This box is about 19cm X 15cm X 11cm and has the same background as the website to create a uniform look and to catch people's eye. Moreover, it has a big QR code on the top for people to scan, which then leads to the website. This box would be at every location fixated, so no need to go pick it up somewhere.
I imagined in the day the lights would be off as they wouldn't catch too much attention (and it also saves power) and then at night there would be a soft changing light.
The box would function as a Bluetooth speaker so the revellers can connect their favourite songs to the box. There's also a remote to change the lights according to the wished ambience.
ideal pARTy box
Of course, my ideal pARTy box would be different, because, in reality, it would have to be much more resistant and solve different problems.
First, it would have to be a material that survives every weather, plus it should probably be fixated in a way to secure that it won't be stolen. I was also thinking of making it solar powered if that were possible since the box is outside 24/7.
Moreover, at first, I was thinking to fixate the artwork, but I imagined that not every artist would be okay with that. So another option would be to place them next to the tiles where the names of the artworks are or you'd have to create the most fitting box for every artwork.
